Consumer Warning: Halloween Eye Wear Accessory May Permanently Damage Eyes

"With Halloween approaching, the American Optometric Association (AOA) is warning consumers about the risks of wearing decorative contact lenses without a prescription from an eye doctor. These non-corrective lenses, which are designed only to change the appearance of the eyes, are easily accessible to consumers and are especially popular around Halloween."

Age-related Macular Degeneration Linked To Low Antioxidant Levels And Sunlight Exposure

Age-related Macular Degeneration Linked To Low Antioxidant Levels And Sunlight Exposure

"Some types of the age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have been linked to low plasma levels of antioxidants and blue light exposure from the sun, according to researchers from Europe who published a paper in the October issue of Archives of Ophthalmology.

"The retina is vulnerable to the damaging effects of light," write author Astrid E. Fletcher, Ph.D. (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and colleagues. "While wavelengths in the UV radiation range are largely absorbed by the cornea and lens, the retina is exposed to visible light, including blue light." According to previous animal and laboratory studies, it is possible that blue light can damage the retina and lead to a deterioration of the area of the retina responsible for sharp vision (the macula); this is called AMD...

...The researchers recommend that people consume key antioxidants by ingesting appropriate amounts of vitamin C, zinc, and carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables. Further, they reiterate the standard precaution of wearing broad-rimmed hats and sunglasses to reduce the exposure of the retina to blue light."

Macular Degeneration Update

From: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/124992.php

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been associated with a new gene, according to an article released on October 7, 2008 in The Lancet...

Dr Sarah Ennis and Professor Andrew Lotery, University of Southampton, UK, and colleagues examined a group of patients in the UK with AMD and a group of controls, screening 32 genes previously identified to be potentially involved in the chemical pathways related to AMD. The SERPING1 gene, a part of the so called 'complement' system in the eye that assists with clearance of foreign material and infection, was found in a higher proportion of the AMD patients than in the controls.

Subsequently, the study was repeated in a group of patients in the US, with similar results. Further, upon a high-density analysis, five additional variants of the SERPING1 gene were discovered to be associated with AMD.

"Our study shows a strong association between age-related macular degeneration and SERPING1, with supporting evidence from an independent replication and a secondary high-density scan of the gene...genetic variation in SERPING1 may implicate the classic pathway of complement activation in AMD...Our findings add to the growing
understanding of the genetics of age-related macular degeneration, which should ultimately lead to novel treatments for this common and devastating disease," the authors conclude.

Wow, these glasses are so light!

Think this will catch on? I doubt it...

from Gizmodo:

What All Glasses Will Look Like in 2020

The latest in designer eyewear, these just-announced, newly-patented "Avant-garde Frames" reduce the strain of glasses that generally pinch your nose and weigh down your ears. By shifting the support to a headband-like contraption, the glasses can hang over your eyes without imposing upon delicate surround tissue or muscles—especially important while jogging. They may look funny to you now, but we're pretty sure headphones looked silly once upon a time, too. Inventor Huang Mei only requires someone to purchase his patents to roll these babies into mass production.

No more reading glasses ??

A recent article discusses advances in surgical techniques that may make reading glasses a thing of the past. Surgeons are replacing the natural crystalline lens in the eye with a gel that will allow the focusing muscles to still function. If successful, this will eliminate the need for reading glasses that becomes more common once patients reach 40+ years of age.

Potential New Glaucoma Treatment

From: http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/stories/2008/08/11/daily29.html?ana=from_rss

"Lexicon Pharmaceuticals said Wednesday it has began preclinical development of LX7101, a potential new drug for glaucoma.

LX7101 is a small molecule compound that may treat glaucoma by lowering fluid pressure in the eye through a new mechanism of action.

Glaucoma is a disease of the eye which gradually impairs vision and is a leading cause of blindness in the United States.

Lexicon scientists discovered the target through its Genome5000 program, which was designed to determine the function of 5,000 druggable genes using knockout mice.

Lexicon (NASDAQ: LXRX), a biopharmaceutical company, is based in The Woodlands."

Myopia Control in Children

The COMET study attempted to determine if using an invisible bifocal lens would slow the rate of myopia (nearsightedness) increase in children who need glasses.

The study shows a clinically inconsequential difference between patients wearing invisible bifocals versus patients wearing standard single vision (distance vision correction) lenses. There was a benefit for patients who did not refocus well for near tasks and whose eyes tended to become esophoric (the eyes have a tendency to cross inwards but do not remain crossed) when doing near tasks.

The take home message is: " The small magnitude of the effect does not warrant a change in clinical practice."
