Diabetes Awareness

We are halfway through Eye Health month and quickly approaching Diabetes Awareness month. There is a diabetes risk assessment test available at http://www.diabetes.org/risk-test.jsp on the American Diabetes Association website.

Diabetes is a leading cause of blindness in North America. There is a simulation of vision affected by diabetic retinopathy here. Diabetes affects the blood vessels in the retina causing them to leak. There is a good synopsis of the process here.

Please take the risk assessment test and forward it to your friends and family members who may be in danger of developing diabetes.

Eye Dare You

There is a great supplement in this month's Chatelaine magazine regarding the need for routine eye examinations. October is Eye Health Month in Canada. The Canadian Association of Optometrists is promoting the importance of routine eye health examinations. As someone who has recently had an experience with a patient similar to the story recounted in the article, it reinforced in me the need for routine care for your eyes and the rest of your body. If you haven’t had your eyes checked recently, or seen your dentist in the last little bit, or if it’s been a while since you’ve had a complete physical with your family physician, now is as good a time as any. When it comes to your eye health, I hope that we’ll be seeing you soon!

Staff Update

As summer draws to a close, I would like to update you regarding our staff.

Bev will be booking your appointments, coordinating the front desk activities, and performing the pre-testing before the eye exam. Jessica is returning to optometry school in Boston for her second year. She will be participating in more clinical training to compliment her classroom education. Julia is back from her vacation and will be coordinating your orders for glasses and contact lenses, as well as helping with some of the ocular health testing.

We hope you enjoyed your summer as much as we did!

Vision and art go hand in hand. Photography is an art that requires great vision. I would like to put a spotlight on a photographer who is using his 'vision' to create great art.

Enrique Miranda lives in Wasaga Beach, ON and is an award-winning photographer. He has been coming to our practice for many years. He uses his vision to create great art. You can learn more about Enrique at his website, www.enriquephotoart.com. While the art and photography is all due to Enrique’s talent, I like to think that we've helped a bit with his vision.

Enjoy the great photos on Enrique's website.

Summer Hours

Mondays and Tuesdays will feature extended evening hours. On Fridays, the office will close at 1:00 PM.

We can usually provide evening pick-up times for patients picking up their glasses or contact lenses. When we call to notify you that your materials have arrived, let us know you need a later pick-up time and we can try to arrange that for you.

Multipurpose contact lens solutions

Several studies show that rubbing and rinsing a contact lens prior to storage removes large numbers of microorganisms on the contact lens surface. This makes it much easier for the contact lens solution to disinfect the contact lens by killing the remaining ‘bugs’. In light of these studies, and the recent problems with some multipurpose contact lens solutions, rubbing and rinsing your contact lenses prior to storage should be the rule.
